DAY ONE

From Lethem, drive across the savannah to Wichabai Ranch.  On this three hour journey your expert guide will stop to point out the savannah and water birds such as Aplomado Falcons, Yellowish Pipets and Jabirus.

Get settled in your rooms, which look out over a lake teeming with birds.  Casiques nest just metres from your hammock and the fruit trees surrounding you buzz with hummingbirds and squawking macaws.

On an afternoon walk around the ranch  you will see Sharp-tailed Ibis heading home to roost and nighthawks and Burrowing Owls revealing themselves.  This birdlist names the birds within 10 minutes walk of the Ranch House.

Have dinner and drinks with your hosts Justin and Erin on the verandah of their ranch house, and hear stories of years of Rupununi exploits.

DAY TWO

Take an early cup of coffee on your verandah and then step out for dawn birding.  The nearby bush islands are home to Tiny Hawks, Crested Bobwhites, Chachalacas, and the White-naped Xenopsaris.  But perhaps best of all, there are Red Siskins nesting only a 10 minute drive away.

See a full birdlist for the nearby bush islands here. .

At breakfast on the Ranch House verandah you can spy grebes, Wattled Jacana, Purple Gallinule, herons, egrets and Buff-necked Ibis as they mingle with the horses and cattle foraging in the pond.

Afterwards, explore the lake and orchards at your own pace, or take a drive or horse ride to the farm where you can find rainforest birds.

After an afternoon of more birdwatching, you can take dinner under the stars, listening to the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Tropical Screech Owl and Great Horned Owl.  Nighthawk and nightjars circle overhead.  With a torch, shine for these night birds that share your dining room.
